UK Government Ciggie Ban is hitting pubs where it matters

It seems the [tag]ciggie ban[/tag] which was implemented on July 1st is hitting pubs where it hurts- in the cash register.

A report in the Sunday Mirror newspaper claims some landlords are claiming their takings have dropped by as much as 40%. For smaller [tag]pubs[/tag] this is of course an enormous drop, and if it continues, is likely to put a lot of pubs out of business.

The Mirror interviewed a number of Landlords and Landladies who’s comments include:

“Even though we’re in the heart of things, we’ve been hit pretty badly. We can’t afford fancy outdoor furniture with patio heaters so people are just staying away.”

“We’re much quieter. Profits have dropped drastically.”

“We’ve had a slide of about 10 to 20 per cent. I’d like to know where the nonsmokers that were supposed to be coming into pubs when the ban was introduced are. I haven’t seen any.”

“Takings are definitely down. Half the customers go outside in the interval to smoke, so we’re losing money from the bar.”

“I’ve lost up to a quarter of my trade.”

“We’ve got a roof garden but when it’s pouring with rain the ban does hit us.”

I have said it before and as i know new very wise [tag]Prime Minister Gordon Brown[/tag] is a regular reader of this blog I will say it again-

“FOLLOW the example of the Catalan Government! Allow each individual landlord/restauranteur/Bingo Hall Owner to decide what there premises will be! Smoking or Non Smoking? They decide- their decision is displayed on the door, then anyone who decides they do not want to breathe other’s smoke fumes can go to one of the non-smoking establishments. It has worked very well here- I would say around half the bars in the town of [tag]Lloret de Mar[/tag] opted to become non-smoking and the other stayed as “Smoking Allowed” Bars.

Why on earth should a pub lose all their clients, and the few that stay be made to freeze their cojones off to make non-smokers happier when the non-smokers have no desire to go in the pub anyway? Totally absurb. As for the staff- if you go for a job you know there are people [tag]smoking and drinking[/tag] in a pub- those against it do not look for work in pubs. I were one of these pub owners who was losing trade and money hand over fist, I would have to consider suing the government.

I thought the UK was a free country?

C’mon Mr. Brown, finish of those square eggs and stuff and get your big bum down to the Houses of Parliament and change this awful Big Brother law immediately.  Admit it was wrong and badly thought out. You can always blame it on your predecessor.

Sigh. Remember the good old days of a fag and quaff with your bum perched on a stool next to the counter? I fear we shall never see those times again…
