Condom Bar Opens in India
A [tag]condom bar[/tag] has opened in the Northern Indian city of [tag]Chandigarh[/tag].
A first of it’s kind in India, the Condom Bar gives away free [tag]condoms[/tag] and aims to promote [tag]AIDS[/tag] awareness and [tag]safe sex[/tag].
In a city where 30% of students have admitted to practicing unprotected sex, and in a country with a very high incidence of HIV, it is surely a very good move on the part of the Chandigarh Industrial Tourism Corporation (CITCO) and the AIDS Control Society of Chandigarh.
[tag]Indians[/tag] are in general reluctant to talk about sex with the opposite sex, although they seem quite happy to practice it, as they have a population of around 1.4 billion. A number of men interviewed said they could not possibly discuss the issue off wearing a condom ‘with a lady’.
(This rather made me smile, and made me think of a certain [tag]Ms. Hilton[/tag], who was more than happy for the whole world to view her performing intimate acts and having full blown sex, but refused to go for a pee in a prison loo, incase someone were to take a fuzzy picture on a mobile phone).
The condom bar’s message is clear- slogans such as ‘Get It On!’ adorn the walls and a drinks are served in glasses with condom motifs. Bar patrons praise the move, and believe it will lead to young people discussing safe sex and certainly thinking about it- even if they cannot bring themselves to talk about it.
On a closing note, a study in India has revealed Indian men require a smaller size condom than the international standard size. This is a serious issue, as 1 in every 5 times a condom is used in India it falls off or tears, which of course renders it quite useless.
Small size condoms are available, but many men are not aware of this, and due to the potential embarrassment that entering a drugstore and asking for ‘A pack of small size condoms please’ could cause, vending machines seem to be a plausible solution to this small, but rather large problem.
